Pit Firing 101 with Clayworx
June 14, 2025 @ 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm
June 14th
2:30 PM – 5:00 PM
The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is thrilled to announce a new partnership with Clayworx to offer exciting and hands-on workshops over the summer! This exciting partnership brings hands-on ceramic workshops & pit firing experiences hosted onsite at the MOA.
Join us on June 14th from 2:30 PM to 5 PM to decorate a pre bisqued pot with combustible materials for the pit- a fun way to spend the Father’s Day weekend!
Select a pre-made, unglazed pottery vessel and learn how to apply colourants and combustible materials to add designs or interest to your pot. Once you’ve added your materials around your pot – place it into the pit. Once all pots have been added, we’ll start the fire!
Return the following morning on June 15th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM to retrieve your pot from the ashes. Clayworx will discuss and give you materials to clean and polish your pit-fired pot.
The cost for the workshop is $55 per person and includes:
- Admission into the Medway Heritage Festival which takes place on June 14th from 10 AM – 2 PM
- A discussion about early types of pots and firing methods
- Your choice of pre-made pottery vessel to add combustibles to and add to the pit for firing
- A cleaning and polishing kit with care and use instructions for your pot
