Natural Clay Pottery Course

Our Natural Clay Pottery Course will guide you through an introduction to earthenware, the regional history of pottery making, how to collect your own natural clay, and you get to experiment by creating your own pot.

We are offering a hybrid course, with participants on-site and virtual. Last year’s remote course allowed for participation from all across the world! We encourage anyone with a good internet connection who are interested to register – wherever you are!

Dates: July 10th to August 21st

Price: $100 per person +HST

Age: 14+

Please Note: for virtual participants: An internet connection will be required for the course and you will be responsible for finding, collecting, and preparing your own clay. Local participants are invited to fire their creations in a pit-firing on site at the MOA.


Session 1: Introduction: Gathering & Preparing Clay

Date: Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, 6:30PM-8PM

Introduction to course

Discussion on Geological Survey on clay sources

Discussion on how to clean clay, how to recognize clay and test it for use.

Session 2: Pot Creation

Date: Wednesday, July 24th, 2024, 6:30PM-8PM

Students bring prepared clay to class, ready to work.

Discuss temper and other inclusions.

Demonstrate on how to create with natural clay-explanation of how different types of clay from different regions have different qualities/challenges.

Session 3: Pot Finishing & Traditional Firing with Richard Zane Smith

Date: Wednesday, July 31st, 2024, 6:30PM-8PM

Traditional above-ground firing with Richard Zane Smith through Zoom

Finish up pots, discussion on completing shape of the pot.

Session 4: Pot Decoration

Date: Wednesday, August 7th, 2024, 6:30PM-8PM

Demonstration on how to decorate pots and materials that can be used to decorate clay.

Session 5: Pit Firing Demonstration

Date: Saturday, August 17th, 2024, 6:30PM-8PM

On-site pit firing at the MOA. Hands on Heritage Day taking place as well.

Session 6: Conclusion, Q&A

Date: Wednesday, August 21st, 2024, 6:30PM-8PM

Participants have a Q&A period with instructors
