Programs for Secondary School Students

General Tour: Introduction to Ontario’s First Nations People (Max. 75)

Begin your adventure at the Museum with an introductory film followed by a special artifact handling and identification session. Complete your trip with a guided tour of the galleries and Lawson Iroquois Village. Students learn about the history of Ontario’s First Nations people before European contact and explore how changes in the climate and environment affected their way of life and technology.

  • 1.5 hrs: Includes hands-on artifact activity and village tour. $5/student

Archaeologist for a Day (Grades 9-12) – Spring and Fall Only (Max. 30)

Students will explore archaeology and the history of Ontario’s First Nations People through hands-on exploration of artifacts and archaeological tools.

  • Full day (4 Hours):  Students will explore what it’s like to be an archaeologist through a simulated outdoor dig in our Iroquoian village. They will also explore careers in archaeology and the experimental archaeology while trying their hand at creating hand drilled stone pendants.

Includes hands-on artifact activity and village tour. $12/student

Archaeology in Practice (Grades 9-12) – All year (Max. 50)

Students will explore archaeology and the history of Ontario’s First Nations People through hands-on exploration of artifacts and archaeological tools.

  • Half day (2.5 hours): Includes Context in Archaeology, an exploration of how archaeologists answer questions using the law of superposition and careers in archaeology.
  • Full day (4 Hours): Half-day program plus students will explore the experimental archaeology while trying their hand at creating hand drilled stone pendants and learn the importance of documentation in archaeology through the excavation of chocolate chip cookies.

 Includes hands-on artifact activity and village tour. Half-day $6/student, Full-day $10/student

Mesopotamian and Roman Archaeology (Grades 9-12)- (Max. 50)

The Museum of Ontario Archaeology has a unique collection of Mesopotamian and Roman  artifacts which take centre stage in this program. Students will learn about the archaeology in these regions in the past as well as today, and participate in a unique artifact handling opportunity.

  • Half day (2.5 hours): Includes Context in Archaeology, an exploration of how archaeologists answer questions using the law of superposition and careers in archaeology.
  • Full day (4 Hours):  half-day program plus students will explore the experimental archaeology while trying their hand at creating their own cuneiform tablets and the importance of documentation in archaeology through the excavation of chocolate chip cookies.

Includes hands-on artifact activity and village tour. Half-day $6/student, Full-day $10/student

Opportunities for Cooperative Education

The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is happy to host limited numbers of co-op students each year. These placements are available with the Education department for afternoons only. Please contact Katie Urban at Katie@archaeologymuseum.ca

Program Costs:

Half-day programs:

  • $6/person (2 hrs)

Full-day programs:

  • $10.00/person (3.5 hrs + 0.5 hr for lunch)

Special day programs:

  • $12.00/person (3.5 hrs + 0.5 hr for lunch)
Chaperones:

The Museum requires ample supervision for all programs.

  • Teachers/chaperones are admitted free at an 8:1 ratio (2 free minimum)
  • Support workers for individual students are always free and not included in the 8:1 ratio
  • Extra/Paid Chaperones = $3
